When you’re just starting on Upwork, focus on beefing up your profile before worrying too much about making money. Getting positive reviews is key, as they make it much easier to land jobs later on.
It might cost you a bit to buy connects, but it also keeps out the freelancers who aren’t serious about the platform.
The toughest part is getting those first 3-4 reviews, but I’ll show you how to do it.
Look for jobs with the word "quick" in them, create a filter, and save it. These gigs usually have short deadlines, so you can snag a few reviews in your first month.

Make sure your profile looks good to potential clients. Take a close look at this image of a client Dashboard and here’s what matters most:

Profile Picture: Make sure your picture looks professional and stands out. A friendly smile and something unique in the background can help.

Title: Be clear about what you do. Instead of just saying "Digital Marketing Expert," get specific like "Social Media Content Specialist for Real Estate Agents." And make sure your portfolio matches your title.
Cover Letter: The first two lines of your Cover Letter are Very Important!! Catch their attention right away by mentioning any big achievements or impressive results you’ve gotten for past clients. Mention that in the first two lines because those lines are visible when a client is going through the freelancers who have applied for the Job.
Example - Hey, I am Bhavy, and have helped 10+ Clients get over a total of 1 Million followers on their Instagram in the First 3 months of Launching their Brand (do this for your niche)
When crafting your cover letter, simplicity is key. Avoid overwhelming the client with unnecessary information about yourself. Instead, focus on highlighting the value you can bring to the project or pose a thoughtful question related to their job description. This demonstrates your attentiveness and understanding of their needs. (Strictly keep the cover letter under 1000 characters)
